Michigan Wolverines' reign as a national power is over, according to College Football analyst Paul Finebaum.
The Wolverines started the streak of three consecutive national champions from the Big Ten.
Finebaum believes the Wolverines are done being a national power for now, citing the past sign-stealing scandal that marred the 2023 championship.
The NCAA fined Michigan but didn’t vacate the national title.
Finebaum brought up the recent off-field legal issues with former head coach Sherrone Moore, which led to his termination this year.
Michigan went 9-4 last season with a highly touted quarterback in Bryce Underwood.
The Wolverines play in a conference loaded with recent College Football Playoff teams, including Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon, and Penn State.
Kyle Whittingham takes over as the new head coach, and the team will face an early test on Sept. 12 against Oklahoma.
Michigan ranks in the top 12 in the 247 Sports and ESPN recruiting rankings, but has shown clear signs of rebuilding over the past two years.
The Athletic placed Michigan at No. 16 in its preseason poll on June 2.
The Wolverines' next game is vs Western Michigan Broncos on 2026-09-05.
And the team will look to prove Finebaum wrong with a strong performance.
But for now, the Wolverines' national power status remains uncertain.
So the upcoming season will be crucial in determining the team's future.
Finebaum said during The Paul Finebaum Show on June 26, “I’m well aware Michigan won the national championship in basketball, but I don’t really take Michigan that seriously in football right now.”
The Wolverines have a hard time ahead, with a tough conference schedule and high expectations.
