The Michigan Wolverines fired Sherrone Moore with cause in December 2025 following an investigation that uncovered an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The university’s law firm Jenner & Block reviewed the athletic department’s culture after multiple misconduct complaints surfaced.
Athletic director Warde Manuel confronted Moore about the relationship on August 29, 2024, just two days before the Wolverines opened the 2024 season. Manuel documented the exchange in a handwritten note on Michigan letterhead, writing that Moore could not bring the staff member on team trips.
The Jenner & Block report found Michigan’s response to misconduct complaints was insufficient and unclear about who handled allegations. The university has not released the full report, but a spokesperson said Michigan acted quickly once the relationship came to light.
Moore became Michigan’s 21st head coach in January 2024 after serving as acting head coach during Jim Harbaugh’s suspensions in 2023. He spent four seasons as an assistant under Harbaugh from 2020 through 2023.
Michigan’s next game is against the Western Michigan Broncos on September 5, 2026. The Wolverines will look to regroup after Moore’s firing and Harbaugh’s departure to the NFL.
The program now faces questions about leadership and culture moving forward. Michigan has not detailed further steps but said it acted promptly after learning of the misconduct.
